How to Measure for Flooring
Accurate measurements are essential for ordering the right amount of flooring. For rectangular rooms, simply multiply length by width. For irregular rooms, divide the space into rectangular sections, calculate each area separately, and add them together. Always include a waste factor to account for cuts, mistakes, and pattern matching.
Flooring Calculation Formula
Total Area = Length x Width (for each section)
Area with Waste = Total Area x (1 + Waste Factor / 100)
Boxes Needed = Area with Waste / Coverage per Box
Total Cost = Area with Waste x Price per sq ft
Example Calculation
Room: 15 ft x 12 ft = 180 sq ft
Waste factor: 10%
Area with waste: 180 x 1.10 = 198 sq ft
Box coverage: 20 sq ft per box
Boxes needed: 198 / 20 = 10 boxes
Waste Factors Explained
The waste factor accounts for material lost during installation due to cuts at walls and obstacles, pattern matching, damaged pieces, and installer error. Different flooring types and room shapes require different waste allowances:
- Simple rectangular rooms: 5-10% waste
- Rooms with many angles or obstacles: 10-15% waste
- Diagonal installation: 15-20% waste
- Herringbone or chevron patterns: 15-20% waste
- Tile with large format or complex patterns: 15-20% waste
Flooring Types: Costs and Waste Factors
| Flooring Type | Cost per sq ft | Typical Waste | Lifespan | Installation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood (Solid) | $6-$12 | 10% | 25-100 years | Professional |
| Hardwood (Engineered) | $4-$10 | 10% | 20-50 years | DIY or Pro |
| Laminate | $2-$8 | 10% | 15-25 years | DIY friendly |
| Luxury Vinyl Plank | $3-$7 | 8-10% | 10-20 years | DIY friendly |
| Ceramic Tile | $3-$10 | 15% | 50+ years | Professional |
| Porcelain Tile | $4-$12 | 15% | 50+ years | Professional |
| Carpet | $3-$11 | 10% | 5-15 years | Professional |
| Bamboo | $4-$8 | 10% | 20-25 years | DIY or Pro |
| Cork | $3-$8 | 10% | 10-30 years | DIY or Pro |
* Costs are for materials only. Installation adds $2-$8 per sq ft depending on type and location.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Add 10% for standard rectangular rooms and up to 15-20% for diagonal installations, complex room shapes, or patterned flooring. Keep extra material for future repairs.
How do I measure an irregular room?
Break the room into rectangular sections. Measure each section's length and width, calculate the area of each, and add them together. For L-shaped rooms, measure it as two rectangles.
What is the difference between sq ft and sq yards?
One square yard equals 9 square feet (3 ft x 3 ft). Carpet is often sold by the square yard, while most other flooring is sold by the square foot. Divide sq ft by 9 to convert to sq yards.
Should I remove old flooring before installing new?
It depends on the type. Laminate and vinyl can sometimes go over existing hard floors if they are level. Tile should generally be removed. Carpet should always be removed before installing hard flooring.
How much does flooring installation cost?
Professional installation typically costs $2-$8 per sq ft depending on the flooring type, subfloor condition, and your location. Hardwood and tile are on the higher end; laminate and vinyl are lower.
Do I need underlayment?
Most floating floors (laminate, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl) require underlayment for moisture protection, sound dampening, and minor subfloor imperfection correction. Some products come with attached underlayment.
How do I account for closets and alcoves?
Measure closets and alcoves as separate rectangular sections and add them to your total. Use the irregular room mode in this calculator to add multiple sections together.
